State Capitol Dome

Metals, Sheet Metal, Roofing, Steep

The goal of this project was to repair and restore all damage to the exterior painted circular tower above the roof of the Capitol and re-gild the famous gold dome. Everything on the capitol today that appears to be gold is really copper panels covered in gold leaf. A large part of what is seen as grey (the ornamentation, window flashings, or detail work) is also copper painted grey. During the Capitol Dome Restoration, a three-year-long project, Douglass Colony Group removed all of the existing copper and recycled it. Everything was custom fabricated, including copper roof panels and flashings, and all of the ornament pieces that were removed were restored and re-fabricated to historical standards and re-installed on the building
