Solar Incentives: How Solar Contractors Can Help You Make the Most of Your Investment
Solar isn’t just a sustainability play — it’s a smart financial decision.
Let’s face it, solar energy is popular. In recent years, businesses and homeowners alike have jumped on the trend and seen the power that solar energy has to influence the environment positively. It’s important, responsible, and business-smart to be ecological. The question is, why do so many people still think it’s financially unattainable?
The cost of power is one of the most significant overhead expenses a commercial building will encounter in its business journey. With its rise in popularity and significant advancements in recent years, solar power is accessible to small and large businesses alike, especially when you take advantage of incentives, rebates, and solar credits.
Navigating it all can be challenging, but partnering with solar contractors who know their way around the industry is your greatest power play. Let’s dive into what solar incentives are out there for you and how Douglass Colony Group can help you make the most of your investment.
Why Solar Shines Bright for Commercial Buildings
Commercial properties are prime candidates for solar energy. We talked with one of our solar experts, and here are the reasons he gave for why solar on commercial buildings is a smart investment:
Unused Real Estate = High Production Potential
Many commercial properties have massive rooftops and expansive parking lots. These are often underutilized spaces that can become highly productive through rooftop solar arrays or solar carports.
| A main advantage with commercial buildings is the amount of roof space… and even aside from roof space, a lot of commercial buildings have a pretty good-sized parking lot. We can always do a carport structure that doubles in use for covered parking, but also, we can put solar on a structure like that

Colorado Advantage: Sunshine + Net Metering
With over 300 days of sunshine per year and a 1:1 net metering policy, Colorado offers ideal conditions for solar. That means every kilowatt your system produces offsets one from the grid.
| “Colorado is one of those states where you can get a one-to-one credit for power that you produce. It’s very much like having your own power production plant at your commercial property.”

Flexible Formats to Fit Your Footprint
From traditional rooftop systems to vertical solar walls and innovative carport canopies, solar is no longer a one-size-fits-all solution. Douglass Colony Group designs flexible formats that align with your architecture and energy needs.
Decoding Solar Incentives: Where the Real ROI Begins
Solar incentives aren’t just the cherry on top — they’re a driving force in the ROI calculation for commercial installations, and a major reason why solar is an essential investment for your property.
Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
The ITC provides a 30% tax credit on solar installations. This applies to the full installation, including equipment and labor.
| DCG supports our clients in a number of ways when it comes to understanding tax credits. We typically look at whether they can get the 30% federal tax credit first. That is the federal ITC tax credit — that’s at 30% across the board.

Domestic Content Bonus Credit
Earn an additional 10% credit if your system uses 40% or more U.S.-manufactured materials. We stay ahead of the curve, sourcing qualified domestic materials in order to make it possible for our clients to receive this bonus credit.
| The domestic one is sort of the new one… certain manufacturers we typically use have been in the process of deeming their equipment as domestically made so our clients can benefit from the bonus credit.

Douglass Colony’s Incentive Process
We don’t just install panels. We assess your tax status, identify what you qualify for, and manage the paperwork so you don’t have to.
| “We typically get a sense of whether they can qualify for any tax credit… and then we handle rebate administration.”
~ Lucas Lupo, Solar Sales/Estimator at Douglass Colony Group
DCG handles:
- How to maximize solar tax incentives for commercial buildings
- Permitting, financial modeling, and tax documentation
- Rebate administration and utility coordination
A Smarter Investment: Roofing + Solar Done Right
Solar is a 25+ year commitment. Your roof should be, too.
| Solar systems will be at 90% production by year 25. So it is a long-term investment where the solar panels can produce at a high quality for over 20 years.
~ Lucas Lupo, Solar Sales/Estimator at Douglass Colony Group
DCG’s Honest Assessment:
| We like to see at least the roof showing a 15-year lifespan from the point [of installation] on… We won’t put panels on a roof that won’t last.
If the roof doesn’t meet our standards, we recommend reroofing — and here’s the bonus:
| If they qualify for the tax credit…that 30% is not only on the solar installation, it’s on any roof repair that goes toward a solar installation as well.
That’s right: reroofing costs related to solar integration may be eligible under the same tax credit. So, it’s worth investing in your roofing system. A good, solid roof will be a great home for your solar panel installation for years to come. We won’t put a solar system on a roof we know will need to be replaced in under 10 years, it’s a strain on our client’s finances, and just isn’t honest business. Douglass Colony Group has your back and wants to see you getting everything you can out of that 20+ year solar life expectancy.
The Tech Talk: What Makes Today’s Solar Systems Smarter
Modern solar technology has advanced significantly in both efficiency and durability, making it an even smarter investment for commercial operations.
More Efficient Inverters and Panels
Older systems suffered greater power loss during conversion. But today’s high-efficiency inverters now convert DC to AC power with up to 92–93% efficiency, minimizing energy loss.
| Inverters used to be around 85-86% efficiency. Now you’re seeing 92-93%.
Similarly, premium solar panels maintain up to 90% of their original production capacity even after 25 years.
Built to Withstand Real-World Conditions
Today’s panels are not only efficient, but also built tough to handle real-world scenarios: snow loads, hail, wind, and high-altitude UV exposure. These features are especially important in states like Colorado.
The Graphene Revolution
An exciting innovation on the horizon is the use of graphene in modules and battery storage. Graphene-based systems promise:
- Better performance in snowy or shaded conditions
- Non-combustibility and fire resistance
- Increased efficiency in cold temperatures (unlike lithium batteries, which lose capacity in freezing weather)
| Graphene… eliminates lithium from modules… there’s not as much of an effect on temperature differences.
DCG is tracking this emerging tech to make sure our clients are ready when it becomes mainstream.
Smarter Design = Smarter Systems
The future of solar isn’t just about better panels — it’s about smarter systems. Our design process includes:
- Custom system sizing based on your building’s actual energy load
- Shadow and weather analysis to optimize orientation and tilt
- Integration with other building systems (HVAC, lighting, etc.) for improved ROI
Whether it’s choosing between string and microinverters or deciding on battery storage, Douglass Colony walks you through the best tech choices for your site.
